Looking back, running was one of my worst nightmares.
I remember my father waking us up (brother and I) at the break of down to go run before we got ready for school. It was a chore. Then I remember my boyfriend waking me up bright early as well to go run on the beach by our apartment. I hated having to wake up so early, I’m not a morning person. Plus I hated the burning sensation in my calves and the unbearable need to puke. If you’re just getting into running, you probably know what I’m talking about. Anyway, for these reasons and more, I just did not want to do it.
Not until I decided that I wanted to make some changes in my life that I took running serious. I decided that I will run pass the burn, run pass the puking sensation, run pass everything that was not feeling right. One day I just stopped feeling the burn in my legs. I did not even realize it. Then I was faced with another challenge. I could not run over two minutes without feeling like I was dying. My endurance was very low. I did not let it stop me. I got on the road as often as I could. I started with weekends, then pushed my self to wake up earlier than my scheduled time 2 days out of the week.
My time sucked at the beginning. It still isn’t the best, but I’ve made good progress.
Bottom line is if you want it, you can do it. You just have to get started. Like Nike says “Just Do It”. Don’t wait until the new year to set goals (those usually go out the window quick). Know what you want, set goals and go get it. If I can do it, so can you!
