My runs have been getting harder and harder these days all because of the pain I’ve been experiencing in my calves. As soon as I hit the pavement, I can feel my calves aching, forcing me to stop for walk breaks sooner than necessary. It is very annoying since I have a goal this month to hit a 2 mile mark running non-stop. It got me thinking about what I could possibly do to get relief from this horrible pain and run at full capacity to get me to reach my goal. It then dawned on me, I need to take out my “Foam Roller” that I previously invested in. It is time I get acquainted with my foam roller.
See, I have recently increased the number of days I run and of course my mileage. Since the incresease, I can’t seem to get over this aweful calf pain. I usually, most times (lol) stretch after my runs. I must admit sometimes I skip unfortunately if I’m in a rush (like yesterday), but for the most part I’m good with streching. Apparently from what I’m fiding out lately, stretching alone is not enough to help me. I’ve been researching what I could possibly do on top of my regular stretching sessions to help alleviate the pain and get me back in shape quickly enough for my next runs. I came accross this article on Runner’s World about different ways to recover post workout. They talked about ice baths, compression socks (which I pretty live in lately) and also foam rolling amongst other things. Of course many of you guys have talked about foam rolling here as well.
I’ve purchased a couple of foam rollers recently, but never really used them. This morning though after my painful 2.3 mile run, I decided to put one to good use, not really knowing what I was doing (leave it to me to use a product that I don’t know too much about). Anyway I plan on foam rolling the life out of my legs from now on and hopefully get the relief I need to keep running properly because I need to reach my running goal for this month. I am determined, and no calf pain will take me down.
I have watched a few videos on youtube already today to get an idea of how to properly use the foam roller. If you guys have any suggestions on foam rolling or how to deal with calf pain, please do share below. I need as much advice and suggestions as possible.
In The meantime, Stay Healthy and Keep Running Friends!
