Everyone has their reasons for doing different things in life (whether good or bad). For me when it comes to running, there is no single reason that pushed me to start. I remember that one day I got up, geared up and started running. My previous attempts at running were completely unsuccessful, but this time around I decided I would not give up and would do what it took to excel at it. I am not excelling yet, but I am doing better now, than when I first started.
Back to the subject at hand. Lol! To answer the question “What pushed me to start running”. I must say:
- Weight loss played a big role in my decision. I was tired of being overweight and I decided to take action. When I realized that I was at my heaviest ever, I needed to fix the issue. Of course I tried several other sports before I really set my mind on running. I tried biking, which I still like doing, but only on occasions. I also started playing racquetball which I really enjoyed as well, but I don’t have a court close by anymore. When I finally approached running again (this time by choice, not because someone else was pushing me to), I had a better attitude about it and was determined to go the distance. Giving up this time around wasn’t an option. 10 months later I am still going strong. Who would’ve thought 🙂
- I live in an area that promotes fitness. There is not one minute that you drive by my side of town and don’t spot a few runners on the road. It doesn’t matter what time of the day or what time of the year it is. They run in the cold (it doesn’t get that cold here, but cold enough to wear cold running gear), they also run in the scorching heat (by that I mean close to 100 degree weather at times). Their dedication always intrigued me. I always thought, how amazing is it that someone can be out here running when all I want to do is jump in the ocean to cool off.
- I also wanted to get involved in an activity that would help challenge me. If it doesn’t challenge me, I will quit ASAP. As you know running will challenge you physically and also emotionally. God knows I get challenged each time I go for a run. But as challenging as it is, it also helps me clear my mind. Since you never stop pushing with running, this was the perfect sport for me. From the day that I started running until now, it has been a continuous challenge. I always push myself to go further, faster; I try to beat my last PR, or improve my running pace, or improve my running form etc… There is always something that I can do better. There is always something to look forward to on next run to better yourself. There is no getting bored with running. By challenging myself physically it has helped tremendously in my personal life with how I deal with different situations. I am now mentally stronger to take on certain tasks I never thought I could before I started running.
These are a few reasons that pushed me to start running and stick to it. I’m sure some of you can relate. As I said at the beginning we all have our reasons. So what about you? What pushed you to start running? Share below. Always love to read what you guys have to say 🙂
In the meantime, Keep running and stay healthy my friends!!!
